Description

For sale on Etsy www.etsy.com/shop/Fireverse

A handmade ceramic display plaque based on the gate to the Mines of Moria in the Lord of the Rings, which I have titled ‘Speak Friend’. It is made from fired stoneware clay and finished with an acrylic paint and varnish. It is 18cm in height, 14.5cm in width, and comes with a plastic display stand. See other similar items at FireVerse Ceramics.

Materials: Stoneware clay, Acrylic paint, Metallic wax, Varnish, The Fiery Chasm of Mount Doom

Brought forth into the light at dawn of the fifth day¹, Speak Friend commemorates the vision of the star-crowned tree beheld by Durin the Deathless² in the Mirrormere at the base of the Misty Mountains. Once seen only by the light of the moon, it is now graven in stone³ for the lesser race of Man to enjoy for all time.

The skill of both Dwarves and Elves⁴ combined to create an image that is recognised across all of Middle Earth⁵ as an invitation into the mighty city of Khazad-dûm, known now as the black pit Mines of Moria⁶.

Shown here in the colours of midnight’s silvery touch, it is then taken on a journey by the Servant of the Secret Fire, wielder of the Flame of Anor, and subjected to trials unfathomable to mortal man⁷.

Are you the one Chosen to inherit Durin’s lost realm and lift it up to its former glory? Display this carving in your Hobbit Hole and your companions SHALL. NOT. PASS... without commenting on it – and they will harbour secret thoughts of jealousy⁸.

¹ Actually, usually between 5-7pm, just before suppertime, weeknights.
² One of J. R. R. Tolkien’s lesser known aliases.
³ Well, clay.
⁴ And the artist – me.
⁵ As well as all the other Earths, except Diagonal Earth which doesn’t have the internet.
⁶ Every country has regions of socio-economic decline, Middle Earth is no different.
⁷ It’s fired to 1,250C in a kiln in my back garden.
⁸ Although I can ‘almost’ guarantee they won’t go quite as crazy as Boromir and have to be put down by Orcish arrows, forcing you to flee and live as a homeless person for another six hours (7.5 hours extended edition). That would be really bad for business.

All resources are mine.
